Capital Park

Capital Park is a historic northern suburb of Pretoria, situated close to the city centre and known for its railway heritage, established residential streets and easy access to several of Tshwane's cultural attractions. Its location gives it a distinctly urban character, but mature trees and older homes provide reminders of an earlier era.

The name Capital Park is straightforwardly descriptive, reflecting Pretoria's status as the administrative capital of South Africa. The suburb developed during the expansion of Pretoria's railway network and became closely associated with the city's extensive railway facilities.

Railway enthusiasts will find plenty of interest in the area. Capital Park was once an important railway hub, and the historic Capital Park railway station and locomotive facilities played a significant role in the movement of passengers and goods through Pretoria. The area is also associated with Rovos Rail, whose luxurious vintage trains operate from a beautifully restored private station and offer journeys through South Africa and beyond.

Nearby attractions include the Pretoria National Zoological Gardens, commonly known as the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa. The expansive grounds provide an opportunity to see a wide variety of animals and make it one of the city's most popular family attractions. The Wonderboom Nature Reserve, with its enormous fig tree and rocky hills, is another worthwhile destination within easy reach.

Capital Park is also close to the Union Buildings and Pretoria's historic central districts, where visitors can explore museums, monuments and examples of early 20th-century architecture. The jacaranda-lined streets for which Pretoria is famous are particularly attractive when the trees bloom.

Capital Park lies in the Pretoria/Tshwane region of Gauteng, forming part of the historic urban fabric surrounding the city centre. Its railway heritage gives it a character quite different from Pretoria's more modern suburbs.

For travellers, Capital Park is especially appealing to those interested in railways and history. With vintage trains, historic railway infrastructure, nearby nature and major city attractions, it provides an intriguing glimpse into Pretoria's development and transport heritage.
