Austin Roberts Memorial Bird Sanctuary

The Austin Roberts Memorial Bird Sanctuary is situated in the Walkerspruit Open Space System. The sanctuary was named after one of the greatest South African ornithologists, J Austin Roberts. He was born in Pretoria and grew up in the Potchefstroom area. Austin Roberts received an honorary doctorate for his achievements which included standard South African reference books on mammals and birds. In 1985 the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary was proclaimed a nature reserve.
The Walker and the Argo streams feed water into wetland basins of which nine are perennial dams. These dams attract many water animals and birds. The sanctuary was fenced later on and has become a valuable amenity with recreational and educational value. There is so much to see and enjoy as well as learn about. There is a bird hide where you can watch a wide variety of bird life from the crowned crane to many unique species. The sanctuary also offers guided walks where you will get to learn so much about the area and the animals.
