Makhulu Swim

Makhulu Swim

Known as the Midmar Mile if Gauteng, the fourteenth annual Makhulu Swim will take place on the 19 February 2012 and is an open water swim of 1000m and a 500m Fun swim which is enjoyed by both serious and leisurely swimmers, with each participant who reaches the finish line receiving a medal. On the day there will be fast foods and refreshments on sale and action photographs will be ready to purchase on site. The swim itself goes directly out from the bank at Leisure Lakes in Midrand and around a buoy about 50 metres into the dam. Swimmers can expect a crush at the first and second buoys. The water in the dam is relatively clean but not clear. Being a small dam, the water quality is easily affected by rainfall. This also has an effect on the volume of water in the dam. The dam itself is a smallish dam normally used for cable water skiing. There are a number of structures in the water. The facilities are good, with grass to sit on and trees for shade, permanent change rooms and ablution facilities, and a fully stocked tuck shop. Hot food and drinks are also available. Parking is available with a short walk to the swim. Being close to Johannesburg, the event draws a large crowd and registration takes place close to the start area.
