Somerset West

The town of Somerset West, nestled on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, lies between this majestic mountain range and False Bay, some 40 km east of Cape Town. With some magnificent scenery and renowned for its wine, fruit, friendly atmosphere and gastronomic experiences, Somerset West is the residential and commercial hub of the Helderberg Basin.

Somerset West is the heart of wine country and major wine estates that surround the town form part of the greater Stellenbosch wine route. Franschoek, Paarl and Wellington wine routes are only 35 minutes' away. The Elgin fruit route starts about 15 km outside of Somerset West and one has excellent access to the coastal whale route.

The Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West has a diverse bird life as has the Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary - a wetland with examples of waterfowl, migrant waders and Ethiopian Snipe. There are a number of walks, trails and golf courses in the area and at the foot of Sir Lowry's Pass is the popular Indibano African Craft Village.
