Helderberg Motorcycle Museum - Sir Lowry's Pass, Cape Town

Set on the Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, the Helderberg Motorcycle Museum is a destination that hums with nostalgia and mechanical artistry. Housed in a purpose-designed space just outside Somerset West, the museum blends industrial charm with a polished, contemporary layout. From the moment you arrive, it feels less like a static exhibition and more like a curated journey through time, one that invites both seasoned enthusiasts and curious travellers to linger.

The facilities are thoughtfully designed to elevate the visitor experience. Inside, the museum is arranged with clean, well-organised displays that allow for easy navigation between eras and styles. Interactive QR codes accompany many of the motorcycles, offering deeper insight into their history and technical specifications. A mezzanine level provides additional viewing space, while the main exhibition areas are largely wheelchair-friendly, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of visitors. Guided tours, often led by knowledgeable staff, bring the collection to life with engaging stories of restoration, engineering quirks and the personalities behind the machines.

Beyond the exhibition floor, the museum offers a refined hospitality element that sets it apart. An on-site, motorcycle-themed restaurant provides both indoor seating among the gleaming bikes and outdoor tables beneath a pergola, perfectly suited to the relaxed Helderberg setting. It’s a place where the scent of polished chrome mingles with freshly prepared meals, making it as much a social stop as a cultural one. Visitors can also enjoy free Wi-Fi, browse memorabilia, and take advantage of group-friendly facilities that make the museum ideal for families, tour groups and corporate outings.

At the heart of the museum lies an extraordinary collection, more than 200 motorcycles, each meticulously restored and carefully selected so that no two are the same. The range spans from early 1910s machines, some little more than motorised bicycles, to mid-century classics and modern icons. Legendary marques such as Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Royal Enfield, Triumph, Honda and Moto Guzzi feature prominently, alongside rare and unusual finds sourced from around the world. The collection is further enriched by an array of “petroliana”, including vintage fuel pumps, enamel signage and period helmets, evoking the romance of a bygone motoring era.

This remarkable assemblage is the life’s work of owner Dave Neto, a passionate enthusiast whose fascination with motorcycles began in childhood and grew into a decades-long pursuit. Originally from Johannesburg and now based in the Helderberg area, Neto dedicated years to sourcing and restoring bikes, often rescuing neglected machines and returning them to pristine condition. Faced with the choice of selling his collection or sharing it, he chose the latter, opening the museum as a way to preserve and celebrate motorcycle heritage. His philosophy is simple: every bike tells a story, and those stories are meant to be experienced.
