Somerset West Golf Club is a classic Cape Town course with a long and proud history that stretches back to the early twentieth century. The club is often dated to the first decade of the 1900s and today combines that history with modern care and thoughtful updates to the layout. Set beneath the Helderberg and surrounded by vineyards and open countryside, the course gives golfers an immediate sense of place with mountain views framing many holes.
The course itself is notable for offering two quite different experiences in a single round. The front nine plays more like traditional parkland close to the clubhouse with tree lined fairways and smaller landing areas while the back nine moves into a more open links like character with wind exposed holes and larger target areas. In recent years the club has invested in a re designed layout that aims to balance challenge with playability so that experienced players are tested while newcomers still find the course enjoyable. Detailed hole by hole notes are available from the club for those who want to plan strategy before they tee off.
Facilities at Somerset West complement the golf. There is a welcoming clubhouse that overlooks the course and provides a place to relax after play. Practice facilities and coaching are available and the club supports both social golf and competitive fixtures within the Western Province golfing community.
