Strand

A popular tourist destination, Strand's main attraction is its white, sandy beach known as "the strand". The 5 km stretch of beach provides safe bathing and swimming and nearby entertainment parks offer a supertube, mini-golf and a tidal pool.

Strand is a small town at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains about 40 km from Cape Town. The town, originally founded in 1714, is situated between the False Bay coastline and the mountains and forms part of the beautiful Helderberg Basin, along with Somerset West and Gordon's Bay.

The stretch of coast between Lourens River mouth and Rooi Els is popular with beach fishermen and rock anglers and organised diving activities can be arranged. Strand is conveniently placed to discover the Cape Peninsula. From here you can easily explore the scenic Boland and the wine routes of Stellenbosch, Franschoek and Wellington. The coastal drive to Hermanus, past Gordon's Bay to Betty's Bay is a gorgeous scenic drive and whale watching at Hermanus in season is a must.

Strand, located along the beautiful coastline of the Western Cape, offers a variety of attractions for visitors to enjoy.

Here are five must-see things to see in and around Strand:

1. Strand Beach: Stretching for several kilometers along False Bay, Strand Beach is a popular destination for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. The long, sandy beach is perfect for leisurely walks and offers stunning views of the ocean and Hottentots Holland Mountains.

2. Helderberg Nature Reserve: This scenic reserve is located just outside Strand and offers hiking trails, picnic spots, and breathtaking views of False Bay and the surrounding mountains. It's a great place to explore nature and spot local wildlife, including dassies (rock hyraxes) and a variety of bird species.

3. Cheetah Outreach: Located nearby in Somerset West, Cheetah Outreach is an educational facility dedicated to the conservation of cheetahs and other endangered species. Visitors can learn about these magnificent animals and even have the opportunity to interact with them during guided tours.

4. Somerset Mall: This large shopping center in nearby Somerset West offers a wide range of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. It's a great place to shop for souvenirs, enjoy a meal, or catch a movie.

5. Vergelegen Wine Estate: Just a short drive from Strand, Vergelegen is one of South Africa's oldest wine estates, known for its historic Cape Dutch architecture, beautiful gardens, and award-winning wines. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, cellar tours, and leisurely walks through the estate's manicured grounds.

These attractions offer a diverse range of experiences, from relaxing beach days and outdoor adventures to cultural explorations and shopping excursions, making Strand an appealing destination for travelers in the Western Cape.
