Marshalltown

Marshalltown is a historic inner-city neighbourhood that sits at the heart of Johannesburg's fascinating urban story. Once a thriving commercial district shaped by the city's gold-mining boom, the area has evolved into a lively mix of business, heritage sites, government buildings and cultural attractions.

Situated in the Johannesburg region of Gauteng, Marshalltown forms part of the inner city and is surrounded by some of Johannesburg's most significant landmarks. Visitors can explore the impressive Standard Bank precinct, which includes historic underground mine workings dating back to the early days of the Witwatersrand gold rush. Nearby attractions include Gandhi Square, a popular meeting place with cafés and shops, and Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo once operated their law firm. The area is also close to the historic Main Street mining district, offering insight into Johannesburg's origins.

Marshalltown developed in the late 19th century as Johannesburg expanded rapidly following the discovery of gold in 1886. Its streets reflect the architectural and social changes that have shaped the city over more than a century. Today, the neighbourhood offers travellers a chance to experience Johannesburg's history, resilience and ongoing urban renewal, with heritage treasures found alongside modern city life.
