Elgin Valley Area
The Elgin Valley is a lush agricultural basin surrounded by mountains, vineyards, orchards and pockets of indigenous fynbos, lying between Grabouw and the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Cooler and greener than much of the surrounding Overberg, it is particularly famous for its apples, pears and increasingly for its wine.
The name Elgin was adopted in the early 20th century and is associated with the Elgin Fruit Juice Company and the development of the valley's commercial agriculture. The broader area was previously known as Grabouw, a name that remains associated with the main town. Grabouw was named after the German town of Grabow, reflecting the European influences that shaped many Cape place names.
Agriculture is at the heart of the valley's identity. Vast orchards cover the lower slopes, while vineyards have become increasingly prominent, producing cool-climate wines with a distinctive character. Visitors can explore wine farms offering tastings, restaurants and beautiful mountain views, particularly during the autumn harvest season.
The valley is also a rewarding destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The nearby Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve protects rugged mountain landscapes, indigenous fynbos and important water catchments.
