Mereenbosch
Mereenbosch is a peaceful coastal and wetland area on the shores of the Botrivier Lagoon, close to Kleinmond and the Kogelberg mountains. Surrounded by reeds, fynbos, mountains and open water, it is a quiet corner of the southern Overberg with a strong connection to the area's natural landscape.
The name Mereenbosch has Dutch and Afrikaans influences and can be interpreted as referring to a ‘lake forest’ or wooded area beside water. The name reflects the landscape around the Bot River Lagoon, where wetlands, watercourses and indigenous vegetation meet.
Mereenbosch is particularly appealing to nature lovers. The Bot River Lagoon is an important wetland habitat and attracts a variety of waterbirds, making the area worthwhile for birdwatching and photography. The surrounding fynbos also forms part of the Cape Floristic Region, renowned for its extraordinary diversity of indigenous plant species.
The nearby Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is one of the area's greatest natural attractions. Often regarded as the heartland of mountain fynbos, the reserve offers hiking trails through rugged mountains and valleys, with spectacular scenery and an abundance of flowering plants during the spring season.
Kleinmond is close by and provides beaches, a lagoon and opportunities for fishing, kayaking and leisurely walks. Further along the coast, Hermanus offers whale watching, galleries and restaurants, while the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley provides vineyards and scenic wine farms.
