Sandhurst

Sandhurst is one of Johannesburg's most prestigious residential suburbs, situated immediately west of Sandton's bustling business district. Known for its spacious properties, mature trees, quiet streets and high-end homes, it provides a striking contrast to the glass towers and busy commercial streets just a short distance away.

The name Sandhurst was borrowed from Sandhurst in Berkshire, England, best known as the location of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The choice reflects the strong British influence on many Johannesburg place names, particularly during the development of the city's northern suburbs. The suburb itself developed as part of Johannesburg's expansion northwards during the 20th century.

Sandhurst is ideally placed for visitors wanting to explore Sandton. Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are nearby, offering designer shops, restaurants, cafés and entertainment. The square's statue of Nelson Mandela has become a popular meeting point and photographic landmark.

Despite its urban setting, Sandhurst is close to several green spaces. The James and Ethel Gray Park provides lawns, mature trees and walking areas along the Sandspruit, while the Sandton Field & Study Centre offers gardens, open spaces and a relaxed setting for food and outdoor events.

The suburb is also within easy reach of Rosebank, Melrose Arch and the Keyes Art Mile, where galleries, restaurants and design-focused businesses provide a more creative side to Johannesburg's northern districts. Wanderers Stadium, one of South Africa's most famous cricket grounds, is also nearby.

Sandhurst lies in the Johannesburg region of Gauteng, at the heart of an area where leafy residential suburbs meet one of Africa's major financial centres. The contrast between quiet gardens and the Sandton skyline is particularly striking.

For travellers, Sandhurst offers a sophisticated base for exploring Johannesburg. Its proximity to world-class shopping, restaurants, galleries and business districts, combined with its peaceful residential character, makes it an appealing place to experience the polished side of the city.
