Jonkershoek
Jonkershoek is a spectacular mountain valley just east of Stellenbosch, surrounded by steep granite peaks, indigenous forest and fynbos. Although there is no traditional town centre, the area is one of the Western Cape’s most popular outdoor destinations, offering a remarkable combination of scenery, history and biodiversity.
The name Jonkershoek is Afrikaans for ‘Jonker’s Corner’ or ‘Jonker’s Valley’, and is generally associated with Jan de Jonker, a Khoi leader who lived in the area during the early colonial period. The valley was later incorporated into the historic agricultural landscape surrounding Stellenbosch, with early farms making use of its fertile soils and abundant water.
Today, the main attraction is the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, a vast protected area within the Cape Fold Mountains. A network of hiking and mountain-biking routes winds through the valley, ranging from relatively gentle walks to challenging mountain trails. The Eerste and Tweede Waterfalls are popular destinations, particularly during the wetter months when the streams are flowing strongly.
The valley is also an excellent place for nature lovers. Its fynbos supports an extraordinary variety of indigenous plants, including numerous protea species, while the surrounding mountains provide habitat for Cape grey rhebok, klipspringer and a variety of birds. The changing vegetation makes the reserve particularly rewarding in spring and early summer.
Jonkershoek also has a fascinating role in the history of water supply around Stellenbosch. Several dams and waterworks were constructed in the valley during the 19th and 20th centuries, taking advantage of the reliable mountain streams.
Jonkershoek lies in the Cape Winelands & Breede Valley region, just beyond the vineyards and historic streets of Stellenbosch. The contrast between cultivated farmland and untouched mountain wilderness is one of the area's greatest attractions.
