Sutherland Dutch Reformed Church

Dutch Reformed Church
The Dutch Reformed Church is situated in Sutherland, Cape Town. It is probably Sutherlands most important heritage building. The Dutch Reformed Church represents the reason for the towns existence. The church was built in 1899 and was designed by Charles Freeman. It is a beautiful design with pointed rough stone and a tall gable roof. The church was once occupied by troops and used as a fort during the Anglo Boer War which makes it an important part of the towns' heritage. The original interior is well kept but has been restored where necessary. The church also houses a German designed organ which is kept in its original casing.
It is an interesting visit. Make a point of joining a tour around the church when you are in the Sutherland area.
