Tokai

Tokai is one of the leafiest southern suburbs of Cape Town. Just 30 minutes outside of the city centre, it has natural boundaries with the Tokai Forests, the Constantiaberg Mountains and the Uitsig Wine farms.

A quiet, residential suburb, Tokai is conveniently close to beaches and mountains and the Tokai forest plantations, which were originally started by Simon van der Stel when he planted over 4000 oak trees here in 1694. The forests are a favourite haunt of locals with their dogs or on mountain bikes and there are a number of rivers that attract wildlife such as squirrels, guinea fowl and birds to the area.

Tokai was initially a farm and the original homestead still remains complete with a resident ghost story. Tokai has an abundance of indigenous and exotic tree species and this prevalence has sparked talk of a possible tree route through the suburb. Tokai is close to the beaches of False Bay, Silvermine Nature Reserve and the Constantia wine route.
