Claremont

Claremont is one of the southern suburbs of Cape Town; only about 20 minutes drive from the city centre. You can reach both Cape Town CBD and the V&A Waterfront by train from Claremont and Main Road has a constant rush of local taxis to most major centres.

Claremont is perhaps best known for its shopping, and the malls – Cavendish Square and The Link - are vibrant hubs of activity. Most of the major shops are represented here as well as some exclusive boutiques.

Little Harfield village, across the railway line in Claremont, is popular with the younger set buying their first homes. It is a collection of former labourers’ homes and a picturesque area through which to drive and Arderne Gardens, on Main Road in Claremont, has one of the richest collections of exotic trees and shrubs.

Claremont is closest to False Bay’s beaches, generally regarded as warmer than the Atlantic Seaboard and is conveniently close to the Newlands Cricket/Rugby Stadium, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Newlands Forest and the Constantia Winelands.

Claremont, situated in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs in the Western Cape province of South Africa, is a vibrant and diverse area with a rich history and plenty to offer.

Here are five interesting things about Claremont:

  1. Historic Buildings: Claremont boasts several well-preserved historic buildings, reflecting its colonial past. One notable example is the Claremont Town Hall, built in the Victorian architectural style and declared a National Monument in 1980. Other historic structures include the Claremont Congregational Church and the old Claremont Railway Station.

  2. Shopping and Entertainment: Claremont is a major commercial and retail hub, home to several shopping centers, including Cavendish Square and the nearby Stadium on Main. These centers offer a wide range of shops, boutiques, restaurants, cinemas, and entertainment venues, making Claremont a popular destination for shopping and leisure activities.

  3. Educational Institutions: Claremont is home to prestigious educational institutions such as Herschel Girls' School, Western Province Preparatory School (WPPS), and South African College Schools (SACS). These schools have a long history and are known for their academic excellence and contributions to the community.

  4. Green Spaces: Despite being a bustling urban area, Claremont offers several green spaces where residents and visitors can enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Claremont Park, situated near Cavendish Square, provides a peaceful retreat with lush lawns, shady trees, and picnic areas. Nearby, Arderne Gardens is a botanical garden featuring a diverse collection of plants and trees, including exotic species from around the world.

  5. Transport Links: Claremont is well-connected to other parts of Cape Town and beyond via various transportation options. The area is served by the Claremont railway station, providing convenient access to the city center and suburbs.
