Scratch Patch

Scratch Patch is situated in Simon's Town in Dido Valley Road in Cape Town, South Africa. It is one of the most popular and convenient places to see a huge variety of gemstones and where you can purchase them. Almost half the world's gemstones are found in Southern Africa. This is a must for visitors.

The very popular Scratch Patch was first started in Simon's Town in 1970. There are so many different stones to admire and "scratch" through. There is also a wide variety of tumble-polished gemstones such as Tiger's Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Jasper, Agates and Crystals, there is so much to enjoy and if you are lucky you might come across some really exotic stones.

The tumble-polished gemstone has been shined or smoothed. It is highly glossy which is done by a slow tumbling process of bumping and grinding. The stones are put into a barrel like tumbler and they rub against one another becoming more polished. It is not an easy job and has to be well managed throughout the process.

The process of gemstone tumbling was started in the USA in 1953. The tumblers that were used in those days were literally house hold paint cans at first but as the stones became more popular, the tumblers had to increase in size. Today the vibrating tumbler is used which helps speed up the process. There is quite an art to polishing the gems.

Be sure to visit the Scratch Patch when you are in the area. You won't be disappointed. You can purchase a bag or container of gemstones to take home and admire. Prices vary from R15 to R90 depending on the size of the bag or container.

The Scratch Patch is open from Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:45pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 9am to 5:30pm.
