Emmarentia is a leafy, established suburb west of Johannesburg's city centre, known for its beautiful parklands, historic character and easy access to some of the city's best-loved green spaces. The suburb takes its name from Emmarentia Botelho, the wife of Italian-born mining magnate Randlord Lourenco Marques Botelho. The couple owned the farm Braamfontein Werf, and after his death in 1890, Emmarentia oversaw the development of parts of the property. The suburb was named in her honour.
Emmarentia Dam and the adjoining Johannesburg Botanical Garden are the area's major attractions.
