Lupus Den Country House
Lupus Den Country House, a quiet, peaceful country retreat, is situated on a fourth generation working citrus and cattle farm in the fertile Sundays River Valley. The farm, a green oasis of lush citrus groves, has been in the Walton family since 1894. A mere twenty minute drive from the Addo National Elephant Park, we offer our guests an opportunity to view the hustle and bustle of an intensive citrus farming enterprise. By contrast, the beef cattle roam, peacefully, through undeveloped Valley Bushveld, where once elephant abounded. Now, instead of the sounds of these mighty mammals crashing, trumpeting, through the dense bush, one hears only the gentle mooing of a cow calling for her calf or the tuneful calls of many birds, including the Emerald Spotted Dove. The Malachite Sunbird, which frequents the brilliantly coloured aloes clinging to the steep banks of the Sundays River can often be seen from the "Look-out" on the farm, a memorial to Sir Percy Fitzpatrick. He (of "Jock of the Bushveld" fame) was an early pioneer, who encouraged many British settlers to emigrate in order to establish farms in our lovely, but then fairly inhospitable, valley.
Our 4-star guesthouse, rated Superior by AA Travel Guides, offers upmarket service at affordable rates. (From R230.00 to 350.00pppn, sharing). Set in a tranquil, tree-filled garden with a large, inviting, swimming pool, Lupus Den Country House was established in 2004 and was a finalist in the AA Travel Accommodation Awards in both 2005/2006 and 2006/2007.
We offer a range of accommodation to suit all pockets, in six tastefully furnished, air-conditioned, en suite bedrooms. To quote a recent guest - "accommodation prepared for friends, not for paying strangers." Three of these bedrooms are in the homestead and three are in a cottage, nestled between the garden and orange groves. The luxurious bedrooms in this Garden Cottage are private units, each with their own patio overlooking the garden, pool or orchards. These 3 bedrooms offer guests the option of either a Superking double bed or three-quarter twin beds. There are no interleading doors between the bedrooms. Each has a comfortable lounge area and a bathroom with both a tub and double walk-in shower. Two of these bedrooms boast double open-air showers as well. All bedrooms offer overhead fans, tea/coffee facilities, hairdryers and toiletries. In addition, the Garden Cottage bedrooms have fridges and digital safes for our guests' convenience.
Lupus Den, which has won an AA special mention "Fabulous Food" award for 2006/07, provides simple lunches and elegant candle-lit, 3-course, dinners for our guests, on request. These are served either in the comfortable living room, where guests can relax on chilly winter evenings in front of a blazing log fire or on the spacious patio cum garden-room, which overlooks the pool and is shaded by a magnificently huge Tipuana tree. There is also a comfortable lounge, where our guests are welcome to relax after a busy day of, amongst other attractions, game-viewing, walking with the elephants, experiencing a township tour in Port Elizabeth, traversing the largest dunefields in the southern hemisphere in a 4X4 or enjoying an historical and architectural walking tour of nearby Grahamstown.
All public areas and bedrooms are non-smoking zones! DStv is available to our guests in our spacious living room. Comfortable sun loungers and swimming towels are available for the use of our guests, who wish to relax at the pool.
Our guest house can perhaps best be summed up in the words of recent guests: "Beautiful rooms, delicious food, fantastic atmosphere and warm hospitality."
