Krugersdorp

The town of Krugersdorp is situated some 40 kilometres to the west of Johannesburg. Krugersdorp was founded in 1887 on the farm Paardplaats and named in honour of President Paul Kruger, a friend of the owner and founder M Pretorius. The town has some beautiful residential areas, especially those seated on the north facing ridges. Services and facilities in Krugersdorp are excellent, and there are a number of leisure options, including the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve with its lions, and the Sterkfontein Caves.

Krugersdorp played a major part in the Anglo-Boer Wars, and men from the town fought on both sides. At one time there was a concentration camp here that housed 6000 women and children in tents. The Krugersdorp Museum displays a number of exhibits that portray life in the area in the early settler days. Visit the Wondercave in the Kromdraai Conservancy near to the town, or the Lion and Rhino Nature Reserve with over 600 head of game just outside the town.
