The sad truth of the Krugersdorp Game Reserve...
The Krugersdorp Game Reserve has been making headlines - for all the wrong reasons, but the situation isn’t a single incident. It’s more a long-running story of decline, closure, and controversial plans to revive it.
A reserve that’s effectively been closed for years.
One of the biggest issues is that the reserve has been closed for an extended period due to serious operational and maintenance problems. Facilities have deteriorated, tourism has collapsed, and the natural environment has reportedly suffered from neglect.
In short, what was once a popular, accessible “mini-safari” destination near Johannesburg has fallen into disrepair.
Lack of funding and capacity
The Mogale City Local Municipality, which is responsible for the reserve, has openly acknowledged that it does not have the financial or technical capacity to restore and manage it properly.
This has led to years of stagnation, with infrastructure ageing and little meaningful progress on reopening.
Controversial revival plans
The big news lately revolves around a proposed public–private partnership (PPP) to revive the reserve. The municipality has issued tenders and is actively seeking a private operator to refurbish, expand, and run the reserve as a viable tourism and hospitality destination.
Supporters say this could bring jobs, investment, and finally reopen the reserve. Critics, however, are wary, raising concerns about transparency, governance, and whether the project will actually materialise after years of unfulfilled promises.
The bottom line...
Right now, everything hinges on whether the proposed private partnership actually succeeds. If it does, the reserve could be revived. If not, it risks remaining another neglected public asset with plenty of plans - but no real progress.
