Devil’s Peak Estate is a compact residential neighbourhood tucked between Vredehoek and the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak, with the city unfolding below and Table Mountain rising dramatically nearby. Its elevated position gives the area a distinctly Cape Town character, combining leafy streets and older homes with immediate access to the mountain.
The name comes from Devil’s Peak, the prominent mountain that forms the eastern shoulder of the City Bowl. The peak was historically known as Windberg, meaning ‘wind mountain’, while the modern name is associated with the colourful Cape legend of Jan van Hunks, a pipe-smoking sailor said to have challenged the Devil to a smoking contest. When the mountain becomes wrapped in cloud, local folklore suggests that Van Hunks and the Devil are at it again.
The neighbourhood developed as part of Cape Town’s expansion onto the lower mountain slopes, and its location has given it a long connection with the surrounding mountain landscape. The area is particularly appealing to walkers and hikers, with trails leading into the Table Mountain National Park and towards the slopes of Devil’s Peak.
History enthusiasts can also explore remnants of Cape Town’s old defensive network in the mountains. The slopes around Devil’s Peak contain historic blockhouses and old routes associated with the city’s military past. Nearby, Mostert’s Mill, dating from 1796, provides another fascinating glimpse into the Cape’s early agricultural history.
Devil’s Peak Estate lies in the Cape Town region, close to the city centre, Vredehoek and the University of Cape Town. The suburb’s elevated position provides impressive views towards Table Bay and the surrounding City Bowl, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
For travellers, Devil’s Peak Estate is less about conventional sightseeing and more about its setting. Its combination of mountain access, historic traces, mature residential streets and spectacular city views makes it an appealing base for discovering one of Cape Town’s most dramatic landscapes.
