Bot River is a small country town nestled between rolling hills, vineyards and wheat fields, offering a relaxed introduction to the landscapes of the southern Overberg. Its location along the N2 makes it an easy stop between Cape Town and the coastal towns around Hermanus, while its surrounding farms provide plenty of opportunities to slow down and explore.
The town takes its name from the Bot River, which flows through the valley towards the Bot River Lagoon. The name is derived from the Afrikaans word “bot”, meaning blunt or thick, although it is also associated with the local yellowfish known as the botvis that was once plentiful in the river. The settlement grew during the 19th century as farming expanded and the railway helped connect the area with Cape Town and other markets.
Bot River is surrounded by vineyards and forms part of the Elgin and Bot River wine-growing area, where cool conditions produce distinctive wines. Visitors can explore nearby wine farms, enjoy tastings and discover farm-style restaurants surrounded by mountain scenery.
The Bot River Lagoon and surrounding wetlands are important habitats for birdlife, while the nearby Houw Hoek Pass provides spectacular mountain scenery. Nature lovers can explore the trails and indigenous vegetation of the surrounding mountains, particularly during spring when the Overberg landscape comes alive with flowers.
Bot River also has an interesting railway heritage. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century helped transform the settlement into an important transport point for agricultural communities in the region.
