Bayview, Mossel Bay

Bayview is a residential neighbourhood in George, set between the Outeniqua Mountains and the coastal plain of the southern Cape. Although primarily suburban, its location places it within easy reach of some of the Garden Route’s most attractive scenery, making it a convenient base for exploring forests, beaches, mountain passes and the wider George area.

The name Bayview is descriptive, reflecting the elevated position and views towards the coast and surrounding countryside rather than a separate historical settlement name. Like many suburban areas around George, it developed as the town expanded, becoming part of the growing urban landscape around the city's established centre.

One of Bayview’s greatest advantages is its proximity to George’s natural attractions. The Outeniqua Mountains provide an impressive backdrop and offer opportunities for hiking, scenic drives and photography. The historic Montagu Pass, one of the oldest mountain passes in the region, is particularly rewarding for those interested in both scenery and transport history. The pass winds through rugged mountain country and provides superb views over the valleys below.

Closer to town, the Outeniqua Transport Museum is a worthwhile stop for railway enthusiasts and history lovers. Its collection of steam locomotives, coaches and vintage vehicles recalls the era when railways played a vital role in connecting the Cape’s inland communities with the coast.

The coastline is also within easy reach, with Victoria Bay and Herolds Bay among the area's popular seaside destinations. Golfers, meanwhile, have several courses to choose from around George, while the surrounding forests and nature areas offer opportunities for birdwatching and outdoor activities.

Bayview lies in the Garden Route region, famous for its combination of mountains, indigenous forests, lagoons and beaches. George itself is one of the region's principal centres, and its central position makes it an excellent base for exploring both the coast and inland landscapes.

For travellers, Bayview is best appreciated for its setting rather than a collection of attractions within the neighbourhood itself. Its elevated position, easy access to George and proximity to the mountains and coast make it a practical and scenic part of the Garden Route.
