Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens

Set in the heart of the coastal fynbos, the area richest in flora in the country, the botanical gardens encompass mountain slopes with wind-clipped heathlands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs, as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with specialised salt-adapted plants, and it is also renowned for its waterfalls and amber pools. This beautiful, secluded garden lies between mountain and sea, and forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The gardens consists of 10 hectares of cultivated fynbos garden and 190.5 hectares of pristine natural fynbos. The Garden Estate is the natural part of the garden with several kilometres of nature trails providing scenic views of forests, mountains and coastline. Proteas, ericas and restios form the main fynbos families in the gardens as well as other important families such as irises, daisies and orchids. The South African national flower, the King Protea (Protea cynaroides) as well as the Red Disa (Disa uniflora) can both be found in the gardens in their natural habitat.

Although is not renowned like its big sister, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the birding is arguably much better in terms of available endemics. The gardens and surrounding mountain-side are some of the best areas to find Victorin's Warbler, while Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Cape Spurfowl, Cape Bulbul, Cape Siskin are also resident.

The Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens is open all 365 days a year and whichever time of year you choose to visit it would still prove a delight.
The Gardens are open from Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:30 and 08:00 to 17:00 on weekends and public holidays.
