Paarden Eiland

Paarden Eiland is a historically significant industrial and commercial area situated between the city centre and Milnerton along Cape Town’s northern coastline. Once a low-lying island surrounded by the waters of the Salt River estuary and Table Bay, the area has evolved into an important hub for manufacturing, logistics and creative industries while retaining links to Cape Town’s maritime heritage.

The area’s coastal position provides striking views across Table Bay towards Table Mountain, and its location near the Diep River and Milnerton Lagoon places it close to important wetland habitats. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts can explore nearby coastal reserves and enjoy the rich birdlife found along the lagoon and estuary.

Paarden Eiland is also associated with Cape Town’s horse-racing history, with its name believed to have originated from the Dutch term meaning “horse island”. The nearby Milnerton area, with its historic lighthouse, beach and golf course, offers opportunities for seaside walks and leisure activities.

Today, Paarden Eiland’s convenient location near the V&A Waterfront, city centre and major transport routes makes it an important gateway between Cape Town’s urban, industrial and coastal environments.
