Highlands Estate

Highlands Estate is a small, leafy residential area on the lower slopes of Table Mountain, close to Oranjezicht and the City Bowl. Its elevated position provides attractive views across Cape Town, while mature gardens and quiet streets give the neighbourhood a peaceful character despite its proximity to the city centre.

The name Highlands Estate reflects the area's elevated position and its origins as part of a residential development on the slopes above central Cape Town. Unlike some older suburbs, it is not associated with a separate historic village, but developed as the city expanded into the foothills of Table Mountain.

The surrounding mountain landscape is the main attraction. Highlands Estate lies close to Table Mountain National Park, giving outdoor enthusiasts easy access to hiking trails and scenic viewpoints. Routes towards Platteklip Gorge and the summit provide spectacular panoramas over the City Bowl, Table Bay and the Atlantic coastline, although mountain weather can change rapidly.

Oranjezicht itself has a fascinating agricultural history. The name means ‘Orange View’, and the area developed around an old farm established in the 18th century. Today, the Oranjezicht City Farm offers visitors an opportunity to learn about urban agriculture, while the nearby Company’s Garden provides a peaceful green space filled with historic landmarks and mature trees.

The suburb is also within easy reach of the V&A Waterfront, Bo-Kaap and central Cape Town's museums, galleries and restaurants. The cableway and other approaches to Table Mountain are similarly close, making the area particularly convenient for visitors keen to combine outdoor activities with sightseeing.

Highlands Estate lies in the Cape Town region, in a part of the city where urban neighbourhoods meet the slopes of Table Mountain. Its elevated setting and central location provide a useful base for exploring both the natural and cultural attractions of Cape Town.

For travellers, Highlands Estate is less about individual tourist attractions and more about location and atmosphere. Its leafy streets, mountain setting and proximity to the City Bowl make it an appealing corner of Cape Town for those wanting easy access to the city's highlights while remaining close to nature.
