Higgovale

Higgovale is an elegant, leafy suburb tucked into the lower slopes of Table Mountain, immediately south of Gardens in Cape Town. Its winding roads, mature trees, mountain views and secluded atmosphere give it a distinctive character, despite being only a short distance from the bustling city centre.

The suburb takes its name from Higgo’s Farm, an old estate that once occupied part of the area. The farm was associated with the Higgo family, who were among the early landowners on the slopes of Table Mountain. As Cape Town expanded during the 20th century, the former agricultural landscape gradually gave way to residential development, leaving Higgovale as one of the city's more sought-after mountain-side neighbourhoods.

Higgovale is particularly appealing to visitors who enjoy gardens and the outdoors. The suburb borders Table Mountain National Park, with access to hiking routes leading towards Platteklip Gorge, Kasteelpoort and other trails on the mountain. The steep slopes offer spectacular views over the City Bowl and Table Bay, although hikers should be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather.

Nearby attractions include the Company’s Garden, the historic heart of central Cape Town, and the colourful streets of the Bo-Kaap. The slopes below the mountain are also home to several historic estates and gardens, while the Mount Nelson area provides an opportunity to experience some of Cape Town's grand colonial-era architecture.

Higgovale lies in the Cape Town region, in one of the most scenic parts of the city. Its position between Table Mountain and the central suburbs makes it possible to combine mountain walks with museums, restaurants, galleries and other city attractions within minutes.

For travellers, Higgovale offers a particularly appealing blend of nature and urban sophistication. Its quiet, tree-lined streets and mountain setting provide a peaceful retreat, while the city centre and Table Mountain are close enough to make exploring Cape Town remarkably convenient.
