Bronkhorstspruit

Bronkhorstspruit is a small town east of Pretoria, set amid rolling Highveld grassland, farming country and a chain of dams. Its position along the N4 makes it a convenient stop between Pretoria and Mpumalanga, while its rural surroundings offer a quieter alternative to the larger urban centres of Gauteng.

The town takes its name from the Bronkhorstspruit, a nearby stream whose name is believed to refer to the bronkhorst, a type of plant or shrub found in the area, combined with the Afrikaans “spruit”, meaning stream. The settlement developed during the 19th century and was originally known as Bronkhorstspruit Station after the railway arrived.

One of the area's most unusual attractions is the Nan Hua Temple, a spectacular Buddhist temple complex on the outskirts of town. As the largest Buddhist temple in Africa, its ornate architecture, peaceful gardens and cultural centre provide a striking contrast to the surrounding Highveld landscape. Visitors can explore the grounds and learn more about Buddhist traditions.

Bronkhorstspruit Dam is another major drawcard. The large reservoir provides opportunities for boating, fishing, birdwatching and other water-based recreation, while its shoreline is particularly attractive for a relaxed picnic or weekend escape. The surrounding grasslands support a variety of bird species and make scenic drives worthwhile.

The town also has connections to the Anglo-Boer War, with the Battle of Bronkhorstspruit fought nearby in 1880 during the opening stages of the First Anglo-Boer War. A monument commemorates the British soldiers who were killed during the encounter.

Bronkhorstspruit lies in the Pretoria/Tshwane region of Gauteng, close to the province's eastern boundary. Its combination of farming landscapes, historical sites, the impressive Nan Hua Temple and the expansive dam gives the area a distinctive character.

For travellers, Bronkhorstspruit makes an appealing day trip or overnight stop, particularly for those interested in history, architecture and outdoor recreation.
