Set among wetlands, mature trees and open grassland on the southern edge of the city, Rietvlei Zoo Farm offers an appealing taste of the countryside without requiring a long journey from Alberton or Johannesburg. Despite its urban surroundings, the farm has a distinctly rural atmosphere, with picnic lawns, gardens, farm animals and plenty of space for families to spend a day outdoors. It is part of the East Rand's broader recreational landscape and is particularly popular with families looking for an active escape into nature.
The Picnic Park is the easiest place to begin. Visitors can spread out beneath the trees, bring a picnic, make use of braai facilities or hire one of the lapas for a larger gathering. Children have plenty to keep them occupied, including the farmyard animals, bird aviary, jungle gyms, pony rides, tractor rides, swings, paddle boats and a miniature train. There are also scooter rides, jumping castles and zipline activities, with some attractions operating mainly at weekends and on public holidays. School groups can arrange activities such as veggie packs, tractor rides, pony rides, steam-train excursions and educational outings in advance.
For adults and older children, the Rietvlei Trails provide a more energetic way to experience the property. Walking, running and hiking routes range from shorter outings to longer trails, while mountain bikers have a separate network of single-track routes. The surroundings of wetlands, willow and oak trees and open grassland make these trails surprisingly scenic, particularly in the cooler hours of the morning. Saturday parkrun also gives casual runners and walkers an opportunity to enjoy the farm in a sociable setting.
There is more to Rietvlei than recreation. The property has an interesting connection with the area's earlier Tswana settlement, with ruins on the farm providing a glimpse into the region's pre-colonial past. Children attending the former Zak's Enviro Club were taken on guided walks to the Tswana ruins and taught about their history, as well as local plants, wildlife and conservation. The site's combination of cultural heritage and environmental education gives the farm an added dimension beyond its family attractions.
Nature is another reason to linger. The wetlands and established trees attract birdlife, while the farm's educational facilities have historically placed an emphasis on wildlife, biodiversity and conservation. The farm has also developed into a broader lifestyle and community venue, incorporating sporting, educational and event facilities alongside its outdoor attractions. For visitors who enjoy combining fresh air with a little history and family entertainment, it makes a pleasant alternative to Johannesburg's more conventional attractions.
