Germiston Golf Club - Germiston, East Rand

For more than a century, Germiston Golf Club was one of the East Rand's best-known golfing institutions, occupying a picturesque position beside Victoria Lake. Established in 1897, it was among South Africa's oldest golf clubs and developed into an 18-hole parkland course where mature trees, broad kikuyu fairways and the lake provided a distinctive setting. The course measured roughly 6,500 metres and played to a par of 72, with the water coming into play around the memorable par-three 15th and 17th holes.

The club's greatest attraction was arguably its setting. Although surrounded by the urban and industrial landscape of Germiston, the course offered golfers a surprisingly green and tranquil environment, with Victoria Lake providing attractive views and a natural backdrop. The original design was influenced by an old English parkland style, with rounded greens, long par fours and several testing par threes. Visitors could traditionally make use of a driving range, putting green, practice facilities, golf carts, club hire and caddies, while the clubhouse and bar provided somewhere to relax after a round. Germiston's proximity to Rand Airport also added an unusual aviation connection to the course: in 1917, aviation pioneer Major Allister Miller reportedly landed on the golf course and identified nearby land as suitable for an airfield. This eventually contributed to the development of Germiston Public Aerodrome and, later, Rand Airport.

The club also has a colourful golfing history. Germiston was an early home of the Nomads Golf Club, founded in 1960 to promote friendship and fellowship through golf. Another celebrated figure was professional golfer Phil Simmons, nicknamed the “Germiston Giant”, who joined the club as its professional in the 1970s and became famous for his prodigious driving. He remained associated with Germiston for about three decades and became part of the club's folklore.

There is, however, an important current caveat for visitors. Germiston Golf Club officially closed in April 2025 after financial and administrative difficulties, and recent reports indicate that the property has subsequently suffered vandalism, damage and neglect. Consequently, it should not currently be promoted as an operational golf course or as a visitor attraction where travellers can simply arrive for a round. There have been community efforts to preserve and revive the historic facility, but its future remains uncertain.

For a travel itinerary, the site is therefore best regarded as a place of historical interest rather than a functioning golf destination at present. Its story is nevertheless fascinating: few golf courses in Gauteng can claim a history stretching back to the 19th century, a lakeside setting, connections with the early development of aviation on the East Rand and an association with one of South Africa's most colourful golfing characters.
