Victoria Lake (Germiston Lake) - Germiston, East Rand

Victoria Lake, better known locally as Germiston Lake, is an unexpectedly scenic stretch of water in the heart of the East Rand, offering a welcome change of pace from the surrounding industrial and urban landscape. The lake is centred around the Victoria Lake Club, where sailing, rowing and canoeing have long been part of Germiston's sporting culture. Visitors can enjoy the lakeside atmosphere, watch boats taking to the water or simply relax and take in the broad views across the lake. The Victoria Lake Club also has a clubhouse restaurant overlooking the water, providing an appealing spot for a meal or drink.

The lake has an impressive sporting history. Rowing began here as early as 1906, when the Germiston Aquatic Club used small locally built boats for competition and recreation. The Victoria Lake Club was formed in 1909 following the amalgamation of the Germiston Boating Club and Victoria Sailing Club, while sailing became established around 1910. The lake's name is sometimes assumed to honour Queen Victoria, but it actually derives from the Victoria Falls and Transvaal Power Company. A bridge was constructed across part of the lake in 1948 for the South African Sailing Championships, adding another fascinating link to its sporting heritage. Today, rowing, sailing and canoeing remain prominent, alongside activities such as open-water swimming, stand-up paddling and other water sports.

Access:
Lakeside walking is possible in public areas around Victoria Lake, although access varies by section.
Fishing is more restricted and is associated with designated fishing areas and clubs, so visitors should make arrangements beforehand rather than assuming that fishing is freely available.
Sailing is available on Victoria Lake through the Victoria Lake Club, but visitors wishing to sail or launch their own boat should contact the club beforehand regarding membership, permission and applicable fees.
The Victoria Lake Club is at 22 Refinery Road, Elandsfontein, Germiston, and its current telephone number is 011 873 9300
