Mowbray Golf Club

Mowbray Golf Club

You would not be blamed if you thought you were sitting in a park, with its beautiful green fairways, water features, immaculate greens, tall pines, indigenous trees and abundance of birdlife, but you arent, This is Mowbray Golf Course. Sitting at the foot of Table Mountain, Mowbray is recognised as one of the best clubs in the country with all major amateur championships having been played there, and it has hosted the SA Open seven times and the Bells Cup three times. Only 15 minutes from the Waterfront and Cape Towns International Airport, the club has breathtaking views with a championship course and world class facilities which are only rivalled only by its high levels of customer service.

After some unusual problems that were experienced on one of the first golf clubs in South Africa in the early 1900s, such as rugby being played on the first hole, the second hole was right next to a Malay cemetery and the fourth also served as a Municipal rubbish dump as well as the fact that members of the public were also allowed to ride their horses there and even graze their cows, it was decided by a a group of players to open a new club. In 1910 Mowbray Golf Club was formed and needless to say all the above hazards were done away with all except the rugby which has now been restricted to being watched on a large tv screen in the bar. 1993 saw the course undergo its last major modernization programme but it was also the year that, on the 31st of October, saw its clubhouse being gutted by fire. But in December 1994, like a Phoenix from the ashes, the new magnificent clubhouse was ready for occupation. Today the course has been restored to its position of being one of the most popular golfing destinations in South Africa, with many of the worlds biggest names in golf having played on there, names such as Bobby Locke, Norman von Nida, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Vijay Singh, Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino and Ernie Els.

Some of the facilities and services which are offered at the modern clubhouse include:
A Restaurant, two well stocked bars, two lounges, a pro shop, shower and locker rooms, a short game practice facility, snacks, serviced verandas and terraces both upstairs and downstairs, snack menus, pub lunches, daily specials and full F+B meal and catering facilities, an ATM machine in the main Club House, Half way house facilities at the Club House and on the 10th tee and a rear projector and DSTV link in main bar for major sporting event viewing (not live on the first hole).
The fully equipped Pro Shop has all the latest golfing gear and accessories. There are also golf carts and trolleys for rent with a trained caddies service. You will always know your safety is a priority at Mowbray with secure parking, patrolling security and marshals on the course.

Mowbray is an 18 hole, Par 72, parkland course, and is often described as providing an excellent test of golf. The general terrain is flat, but with trees and water features it makes for an interesting experience. One of the factors which need to be taken into account when playing any coastal course is, the wind, but Mowbray is different because all the holes have been laid so that wont find yourself playing into or against the wind. The fairways consist mostly of kikuyu grass while the greens are a mixture of fine grasses which provide an excellent putting surface. The course is not particularly long, with the men playing 6029 metres and the ladies playing 5023 metres, but the golfer will find Mowbray a real challenge. It is said that if you hit the ball straight, you will do well and even if you go off line here and there, the rough is very forgiving and is kept well trimmed.
The dress code on the course is the standard golfing dress, i.e. shirts with collars, tailored shorts or trousers and closed shoes with hard or soft spikes. Men may wear shorts with long socks or short predominantly white socks.
It is essential that bookings are made in advance with Tuessdays and Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays all day reserved for members only. However, if there are times available the day before or on the actual day, they are made available to visitors with official handicaps. In December and January one tee only is in use with times available throughout the day but during the other months tee times from both the 1st and 10th tees are from 07:05 until 08:50 in the morning, and from 11:40 until 13:30 in the afternoon.

One of the above mentioned facilities was the restaurant which can be found in the main club house, it is open daily from Monday to Sunday and can operate in the evenings by arrangement. The pub lunch menus include fish and chips, chicken and beef curries, bangers and mash, fillet steaks, calamari and chips, fresh catch of the day and enticing salads, while Sunday offers the special Sunday lunch. The Sunday lunch consists of a 5-course meal that, in the words of its proprietors, will keep you smiling. The restaurant also offers full bar services and a refreshing wine list. With the excellent catering facilities it is no surprise that linked to the restaurant are function facilities which can be used for weddings, birthdays, mini-conferences, presentations, braais, business meetings, reunions and golf days. For more information on functions please call +27-21-6853018 and ask for the Catering Manager.
