Mowbray
Mowbray is one of Cape Town’s older southern suburbs, set along the Liesbeek River between Observatory and Rondebosch. Its leafy streets, historic buildings and proximity to the University of Cape Town give it a lively mixture of heritage, student culture and everyday city life.
The suburb takes its name from Mowbray in London, England. The name was adopted in the 19th century, when the area was developing from farmland into a residential settlement. Before that, the land formed part of the historic Liesbeek Valley, an area with a much longer indigenous and colonial history.
One of Mowbray’s most interesting features is its collection of historic homes and buildings, particularly around the old village centre. The Liesbeek River corridor provides green space for walking and offers a pleasant escape from the surrounding urban environment. Nearby, the Two Rivers Urban Park marks the meeting of the Liesbeek and Black Rivers and has become an important area for recreation and environmental restoration.
Mowbray is also close to several significant cultural attractions. The nearby Rhodes Memorial, on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, provides spectacular views across Cape Town and the Cape Flats. The University of Cape Town’s Upper Campus is another landmark, with its striking architecture and mountain backdrop.
History enthusiasts can explore the broader Liesbeek Valley, which was among the earliest areas of Dutch colonial settlement at the Cape. The river was also an important boundary during the early colonial period and has played a recurring role in Cape Town’s history.
Mowbray lies in the Cape Town region, close to the City Bowl and the southern suburbs. Its railway station and major roads make it particularly well connected, while its position beneath Devil’s Peak places some of the city’s finest mountain scenery close at hand.
