Alto Wine Estate

Alto Wine Estate

Set on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, in the beautiful Stellenbosch Wine of Origin district, lays the home of Alto Wines. The area is described by locals as being the Golden Triangle because of its soils quality and almost perfect climate. The red grape vines are grown on trellises which rise on the granites slopes from 100 metres above sea level to over 500 metres above sea level. Since the farms origin as part of a larger farm named Groenrivier (Green River) in 1693 it has been known for its cultivation of red grape varietals. In 1919 Groenrivier was divided by its owner Hennie Malan and the section he and his son, Manie, retained was converted from partial wilderness into the existing Alto wine estate. The name Alto originates from Latin and ties the Malan families aspirations for their wines to the altitude of the vineyards. Piet du Toit bought the farm in 1959 and ran it until 1983 when he retired, his son Hempies, a well-known Springbok rugby player, succeeded him. Hempies du Toit continued the fine red wine-making traditions of his predecessors until May 2000 when Neethlingshof's winemaker Schalk van der Westhuizen took over. To this day Alto is, red wine country. Over the years Alto has won a variety of awards including a gold medal at Decanter World Wine Awards 2005 for the Alto Shiraz 2001 and the Trophy for the best SA Rhone varietal over 10 pounds.
