Westlake

Westlake is a leafy southern suburb of Cape Town, set between the slopes of Constantiaberg and the shores of Zandvlei. Its combination of established homes, business parks, vineyards and open mountain landscapes gives it a distinctly relaxed character, while its position makes it a convenient gateway to the southern peninsula.

The name Westlake is a straightforward reference to the area’s position beside the western side of the lake-like waters of Zandvlei. The neighbourhood developed largely during the 20th century as Cape Town expanded southwards, with former farmland gradually giving way to residential and commercial development.

One of Westlake’s most appealing features is its proximity to nature. The nearby Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park offers hiking trails through fynbos-covered mountains, with viewpoints overlooking False Bay and the surrounding suburbs. The Constantia Greenbelts provide gentler walking routes through wooded valleys and along streams.

Golf enthusiasts can visit Westlake Golf Club, a scenic parkland course framed by the Constantiaberg mountains. The surrounding area is also closely associated with the Constantia wine route, where historic estates offer wine tasting, restaurants and beautiful gardens.

Zandvlei, on the eastern side of the suburb, is an important recreational and wetland area. Sailing, canoeing and rowing are popular activities, while the surrounding vegetation attracts a variety of birdlife. The nearby False Bay coastline provides further opportunities for swimming, surfing and beach walks.

Westlake lies in the Cape Town region, close to Muizenberg, Lakeside, Tokai and Constantia. Its location at the meeting point of mountains, wetlands and vineyards makes it particularly attractive to visitors who want to combine outdoor activities with the city's cultural and culinary attractions.

For travellers, Westlake offers a useful balance between convenience and countryside. Its access to Table Mountain National Park, the Constantia vineyards and Zandvlei makes it an excellent base for exploring the greener southern side of Cape Town, while the city centre remains within easy driving distance.
