Under the care of the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Service, Spioenkop Dam and Nature Reserve comprise an area approximately 4,400 hectares in size.
Situated 35 kilometres from the well known Battlefields town of Ladysmith and 14 kilometres from the Drakensberg town of Winterton, Spioenkop Dam is a favourite tourist destination in Natal.
Visitors can enjoy the unique experience of walking through bush populated by white rhino, giraffe, buffalo and eland, accompanied by a game guard.
The Spioenkop Dam offers excellent opportunities for fishing where species such as barbell, carp, scalies, bluegill and tilapia can be hooked. Power boating is also permitted, while canoes are available for hire to nature lovers wishing to do their game viewing from the dam.
Spioenkop Dam was also the site of one of the most bloody and futile battles fought in an attempt to break the Siege of Ladysmith on 24th January 1900 during The Anglo Boer War. The battle site overlooks the dam and is clearly visible from the reserve.
Spioenkop Dam with its quiet, natural surroundings has all the ingredients to recharge stressed city batteries.
