Salt River

Salt River is one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs, situated just east of the city centre beneath the slopes of Devil’s Peak. Once a thriving industrial district powered by textile mills, factories and railway workshops, it has evolved into one of the city’s most creative and culturally diverse neighbourhoods, where historic buildings now stand alongside artist studios, design spaces and independent cafés.

The suburb’s industrial heritage remains visible in its beautifully restored warehouses and Victorian-era architecture, many of which have found new life as creative workspaces and boutique businesses. Salt River is also renowned for its colourful street art, with striking murals transforming walls throughout the neighbourhood into an open-air gallery.

Its central location places visitors within easy reach of some of Cape Town’s leading attractions. The neighbouring Woodstock district offers vibrant markets, galleries and artisan eateries, while the District Six Museum provides moving insight into one of South Africa’s most significant chapters in social history. Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the city’s historic centre are all only a short drive away.

Combining rich history with a thriving creative spirit, Salt River offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Cape Town’s dynamic urban culture and ever-evolving character.
