Roodefontein

Roodefontein is a peaceful rural area in the Piesang Valley near Plettenberg Bay, surrounded by green hills, indigenous vegetation and the forested landscapes for which this part of the southern Cape is famous. Away from the bustle of the coastal resort, it offers a quieter glimpse of the countryside and agricultural heritage behind the Garden Route’s popular beaches.

The name Roodefontein combines the Afrikaans words “roode”, meaning red, and “fontein”, meaning spring or fountain. It refers to the historic farm of the same name, which became an important property in the Piesang Valley during the 19th century. In 1847, British settler William Henry Newdigate purchased most of the farm and later anglicised its name to Redbourn. He also established St Andrew’s Church there, adding an intriguing layer of heritage to the valley.

The surrounding landscape is ideal for those who enjoy nature and rural scenery. The Piesang Valley provides opportunities for walking, birdwatching and photography, while the nearby indigenous forests reveal the rich plant life of the southern Cape. The Roodefontein Dam, constructed on the Piesang River, is another distinctive feature of the area.

Plettenberg Bay is close enough for easy access to its beaches, restaurants and waterfront attractions. The spectacular Robberg Peninsula is a highlight, with coastal hiking trails, archaeological sites and views across the Indian Ocean. Further inland, the forests around The Crags and Nature’s Valley offer more opportunities for hiking and wildlife watching.

Roodefontein lies in the Garden Route region, where fertile valleys meet forested mountains and a spectacular coastline. Its rural setting provides an appealing contrast to the more developed holiday areas around Plettenberg Bay.

For travellers, Roodefontein is best appreciated for its tranquillity and heritage. The historic farm landscape, river valley and proximity to Plettenberg Bay make it a rewarding place to explore the quieter countryside behind one of South Africa’s best-known coastal destinations.
