Oukasie

Oukasie is a historic township just north of Brits, with a strong community identity and an important place in the social history of the North West. Unlike many newer settlements, its story reaches back to the early twentieth century, making it an interesting destination for travellers keen to look beyond conventional tourist attractions.

Established as a labour settlement in the late 1920s, Oukasie became closely associated with workers from the surrounding farms and growing industrial economy. During the apartheid era, residents strongly resisted attempts to remove the community to settlements farther from Brits. This resistance became an important chapter in the township's history and helped preserve Oukasie as a community in its original location.

Today, Oukasie remains a predominantly residential area, but its proximity to Brits makes it a useful base for exploring the attractions of the surrounding countryside. The nearby Magaliesberg provides a striking backdrop, with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching and scenic drives. The agricultural land around Brits is also known for citrus and other crops, benefiting from irrigation associated with Hartbeespoort Dam.

Visitors can explore the wider Brits area for nature and heritage attractions, including the De Wildt wildlife conservation facilities and the historic Peace Tree, associated with the 1864 Boer Civil War armistice.

Situated in the Eastern Region, Oukasie offers a different perspective on North West, where community history is as significant as the surrounding landscape. For travellers interested in South Africa's social heritage, its story of resilience, displacement and determination adds depth to a visit to the Brits area.
