Naukluft Mountain Region Accommodation

The Naukluft Mountain Region is one of Namibia’s most dramatic mountain landscapes, where rugged limestone cliffs, deep gorges and clear mountain pools rise unexpectedly from the surrounding desert. The name Naukluft is generally associated with the Afrikaans words ‘nou’ and ‘kluft’, referring to a narrow gorge or cleft. Rather than a conventional town, the Naukluft is a remote mountainous area within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, forming part of one of Namibia’s most spectacular protected landscapes.

Hiking is the principal attraction. Well-maintained trails lead into the mountains, with routes ranging from relatively short walks to demanding multi-day treks. The Waterkloof Trail is particularly rewarding, winding through rugged scenery and following a deep gorge where pools and streams can appear surprisingly abundant in this otherwise arid environment. The Olive Trail offers another memorable experience, passing through rocky terrain and giving hikers a chance to appreciate the remarkable adaptations of plants and animals to the dry climate.

The mountains also provide refuge for wildlife. Hartmann’s mountain zebra, kudu, klipspringer and baboons can be encountered, while birds of prey soar above the cliffs. The area’s springs and pools create small pockets of greenery that attract wildlife and add an unexpected freshness to the desert scenery.

The Naukluft has a fascinating human history too. Before becoming part of the national park, the area was used by Nama communities and later became associated with farming and German colonial activity. Today, its natural beauty is protected as part of the vast Namib-Naukluft National Park.

Situated in the Hardap Region, the Naukluft Mountain Region is best experienced slowly, with time for hiking, wildlife watching and appreciating the extraordinary silence of the mountains.
