Solitaire is a tiny desert outpost in central Namibia, set amid vast gravel plains, rugged mountains and the stark landscapes that stretch towards the Namib-Naukluft wilderness. Despite its diminutive size, it has become one of the country’s most recognisable roadside stops, particularly for travellers heading towards Sossusvlei or the coast.
The settlement dates from 1948, when Willem Christoffel van Coller acquired a large tract of land to establish a Karakul sheep farm. His wife, Elsie Sophia, gave the property the name Solitaire. The name has a wonderfully appropriate double association: it can refer to a solitaire diamond, while also suggesting solitude and isolation - both fitting descriptions of this remote place. The farm later developed into the small settlement seen today.
Solitaire is famous for its rustic general store, petrol station, bakery and café, making it an essential refreshment stop on the long roads through this sparsely populated part of Namibia. The legendary apple pie associated with the late Percy ‘Moose’ McGregor has become part of the settlement’s folklore, and enjoying a slice remains a popular ritual for visitors. Rusting vintage vehicles scattered around the settlement add to its quirky, almost cinematic atmosphere.
The surrounding landscape is equally compelling. Scenic drives reveal rocky mountains, dry riverbeds and enormous horizons, while wildlife such as gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and mountain zebra can sometimes be seen in the wider area. The settlement also provides a convenient base for exploring attractions such as Sesriem Canyon and the spectacular dunes of Sossusvlei.
Solitaire lies in the Khomas Region, close to the boundary with the Hardap Region and near the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Its remote position means exceptionally clear skies, making the area superb for stargazing.
For travellers, Solitaire is much more than a place to refuel. It is a memorable desert waypoint where good food, eccentric roadside character, fascinating history and an immense landscape combine to create one of Namibia’s most enduring travel experiences.
