Jonkmanspruit is a rural settlement and historic farming area near Hoedspruit, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Limpopo’s Lowveld. Set between the Blyde River and the mountains of the northern Drakensberg, it makes an appealing base for travellers wanting to experience the region’s wildlife, landscapes and agricultural heritage away from the busier tourist centres.
The name Jonkmanspruit means “young man’s stream” or “young men’s creek”, and has its roots in the pioneering days of the 1850s. When Ohrigstad became an important settlement, younger farmers were encouraged to establish themselves further afield. A group of young men moved into the area between the mountains and the Blyde River and named their farm Jonkmanspruit. The name remains closely associated with the countryside around modern-day Hoedspruit.
Today, the Jonkmanspruit area is best appreciated for its rural character and access to the extraordinary attractions of the Kruger National Park & Mopani Region. Nearby Hoedspruit provides a convenient starting point for game drives, wildlife encounters and excursions into the surrounding private reserves, while the Blyde River and spectacular escarpment scenery offer opportunities for hiking, photography and scenic drives.
Agriculture is another defining feature, with mango farming particularly prominent in the Hoedspruit area. Visitors can experience this side of Lowveld life at local farm outlets and countryside attractions, where seasonal produce provides a delicious taste of the fertile Blyde River valley. Jonkmanspruit may be modest in size, but its combination of pioneer history, farming traditions and wild Lowveld scenery gives this quiet corner of Limpopo plenty of character.
