Imhoff’s Gift is a small rural settlement near Kommetjie on the western side of the Cape Peninsula, where open farmland, fynbos and rugged mountain slopes create a striking contrast with the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Its countryside setting gives it a distinctly different character from the built-up suburbs of Cape Town, despite being within the metropolitan area.
The unusual name dates back to the 18th century and is associated with Hendrik Swellengrebel, who granted the property to the Cape government official and VOC official Hendrik Jacob van Imhoff. The land became known as Imhoff’s Gift, with ‘Gift’ referring to a grant of land rather than a present in the modern sense. The historic farm is an important reminder of the Cape’s early colonial agricultural landscape.
Today, Imhoff’s Gift is best known for its relaxed rural atmosphere and proximity to the coast. The area has developed a reputation for small-scale attractions, farm-style eateries and outdoor activities, making it a popular stop for visitors exploring the southern peninsula. Horse riding and walks through the surrounding countryside are among the activities available, while the nearby coastline provides opportunities for surfing, fishing and beach walks.
The settlement is also close to the impressive landscapes of Table Mountain National Park. Scenic routes lead towards Kommetjie, Scarborough and Cape Point, with the Atlantic coastline providing spectacular viewpoints along the way. The surrounding fynbos is particularly attractive in spring when indigenous plants burst into flower.
Imhoff’s Gift lies in the Cape Town region, on the western side of the peninsula where the city gives way to open countryside and wild coastal landscapes. Nearby attractions include Long Beach at Kommetjie, the Slangkop Lighthouse and the extensive nature areas around Cape Point.
For travellers, Imhoff’s Gift offers a glimpse of a more rural Cape Peninsula, combining colonial history, smallholding traditions and easy access to some of Cape Town’s most spectacular coastal scenery.
