Albertinia

Set at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains along the Garden Route, Albertinia is one of those small South African towns that quietly rewards travellers who take the time to stop. Often referred to as the “Home of the Aloe”, the town is surrounded by rolling farmland, indigenous fynbos and vast fields of Aloe ferox, whose fiery orange blooms brighten the landscape during winter. Albertinia began life in 1900 on the farm Grootfontein and was named after Johannes Rudolph Albertyn, the first Dutch Reformed minister to serve the community. Its history is closely tied to farming, thatching reed and the aloe industry, which still shapes much of the town’s character today.

One of the town’s most distinctive attractions is its thriving aloe industry. Visitors can explore local aloe factories and discover how the medicinal plant is processed into skincare and wellness products exported around the world. The region is considered one of South Africa’s foremost producers of aloe-based goods, and the hardy plants have become a symbol of the town itself. Albertinia also has a fascinating agricultural heritage linked to thatching reed and ochre mining, both of which are celebrated at the local museum. The small but engaging Albertinia Museum offers insight into the lives of early settlers and the industries that helped the community survive in this rugged landscape.

Beyond its history, Albertinia makes an excellent base for exploring the quieter side of the Garden Route. Wildlife enthusiasts can head to the nearby Garden Route Game Lodge for Big Five game drives in a malaria-free reserve, while wine lovers can venture to the nearby Jakkalsvlei wine estate for tastings among the vineyards. The town itself retains an old-fashioned country atmosphere, complete with a handsome Dutch Reformed Church and the historic Albertinia Hotel, which has welcomed travellers since 1900. For something a little unusual, visitors can seek out the famous Whispering Tree in nearby Voëlroepersfontein - a remarkable fig tree recognised as a South African Champion Tree.
