Set within the leafy expanse of Green Point’s urban parkland, Green Point Athletic Stadium offers a quieter, more intimate counterpoint to its imposing neighbour, Cape Town Stadium. Yet this is no secondary space. With Table Mountain rising in the distance and the Atlantic breeze never far away, the venue feels distinctly Capetonian - open, scenic and deeply connected to the city’s sporting heritage.
That heritage stretches back more than a century. The original Green Point Stadium, established in 1897, was a multi-purpose ground that hosted everything from cycling and athletics to football and major concerts. It evolved over decades before being partially demolished in 2007 to make way for the 2010 FIFA World Cup precinct. In its place, the modern athletics stadium emerged, reopening in the mid-2010s as a dedicated facility that honours the site’s long-standing role in Cape Town’s sporting life.
Today, the stadium is designed with both performance and accessibility in mind. A full-sized athletics track sits at its heart, complemented by field event facilities for long jump, high jump and javelin. Seating for several thousand spectators ensures an intimate viewing experience, while additional amenities, training areas, event spaces and support facilities make it a versatile venue for both professional meets and community use. It is also regularly used as a warm-up and training ground for major events hosted in the surrounding precinct, reinforcing its role as a working stadium rather than a showpiece alone.
A significant refurbishment completed in 2025 has propelled the stadium firmly into the present. The ageing track was entirely replaced with a new polyurethane surface, alongside upgrades to key competition areas including sprint starts and field event run-offs. These improvements have elevated the venue to international competition standards, enabling it to host higher-level athletics events and strengthening its position as one of Cape Town’s premier sporting facilities.
With its blend of history, scenery and renewed world-class credentials, the Green Point Athletic Stadium is less a relic of the past than a living, evolving space - one that continues to shape Cape Town’s sporting story.
