Waverley Shul

A Brief History of Waverley Shul (Jewish Synagogue)

Adapted from a report written by Syd Druckman to coincide with the shul’s 25th anniversary in 1980.

In the 1950’s a number of young Jewish men felt that there was a need for a shul in the Northern suburbs of Johannesburg. Through word of mouth, it was arranged that they would have Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Rabbi Newman, the then rabbi of the country communities, approached the group and said he would like to officiate at the services.
