Wynberg

Wynberg is one of Cape Town’s oldest and most historically significant southern suburbs, located between Kenilworth and Plumstead at the foot of the Constantiaberg mountains. Once a rural farming area known for its orchards and vineyards, Wynberg has evolved into a vibrant urban neighbourhood while retaining much of its historic character and charm.

The suburb’s history dates back to the 18th century, with its name meaning “wine mountain” in Afrikaans, reflecting the region’s early agricultural heritage. One of its most treasured landmarks is Maynardville Park, a beautiful public garden famous for its annual Shakespeare productions and peaceful lakeside setting. Nearby, the historic Wynberg Park provides a popular green escape with landscaped gardens, walking paths and recreational areas.

Visitors can also explore the suburb’s Victorian and Edwardian architecture, browse independent shops and cafés, and enjoy the cultural diversity of the surrounding area. The nearby Constantia Wine Route, home to historic estates such as Groot Constantia, offers wine tastings and a glimpse into Cape Town’s centuries-old winemaking tradition.

With its rich heritage, green spaces and convenient location, Wynberg offers a fascinating blend of history, culture and contemporary Cape Town living.
