Vaal Dam Accommodation

Vaal Dam is one of South Africa’s great inland water playgrounds, stretching across a vast landscape where the Free State meets Gauteng. Its broad expanse of water, open grasslands and gently undulating shoreline creates an inviting setting for weekends away, water sports and quiet escapes into nature.

The dam was created in the early 1930s by the construction of the Vaal Dam wall across the Vaal River, primarily to secure water supplies for the growing Witwatersrand. Today, its enormous surface area supports a thriving recreational industry, with holiday resorts, waterfront accommodation and private retreats scattered around the shoreline.

Boating and fishing are among the most popular activities. Anglers come in search of species such as yellowfish, carp and catfish, while sailing, water-skiing, jet skiing and canoeing provide more energetic ways to experience the water. For a slower outing, the shoreline is ideal for picnics, photography and birdwatching, particularly in the quieter bays and coves.

The Free State side of the dam includes Oranjeville and a number of rural communities, where visitors can enjoy the peaceful agricultural landscape surrounding the reservoir. Sunsets over the water are a particular highlight, with the expansive horizon creating spectacular evening views.

Within the Northern & Eastern Free State Region, Vaal Dam offers an appealing combination of outdoor recreation and wide-open scenery.
