Uniondale

Uniondale is a small historic town set between the rugged Kammanassie and Baviaanskloof mountains, surrounded by wide-open farmland and the distinctive landscapes of the southern Karoo. Its quiet streets, old buildings and dramatic mountain setting make it an appealing stop for travellers exploring the less-visited interior of the Western Cape.

The town was established in 1856 after the farms of Hopedale and Uniondale were combined for the development of a new settlement. Its name reflects this union, with ‘Uniondale’ referring to the joining of the two original communities. The town's history is closely linked to farming, particularly sheep and fruit production, which remain important in the surrounding countryside.

Uniondale's historic centre contains several interesting examples of 19th-century architecture, including the Dutch Reformed church and old Karoo-style homes. The town is also known for its association with the mysterious ‘Uniondale Hitchhiker’, a local ghost story about a young woman said to appear to motorists travelling along the roads near the town. Whether regarded as folklore or fact, the tale has become part of Uniondale's character.

The surrounding countryside provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor exploration. The Kammanassie Mountains offer scenic drives, hiking and photography, while the nearby Baviaanskloof provides access to one of South Africa's most spectacular wilderness areas. The dry valleys and rugged cliffs are particularly impressive in the changing light of early morning and late afternoon.

Uniondale lies in the Klein Karoo & Groot Karoo region, although its landscape sits at an interesting transition between the semi-arid interior and the more mountainous areas towards the coast. The combination of mountains, open plains and seasonal greenery gives the surroundings a distinctive character.

For travellers, Uniondale is a destination where history, landscape and folklore come together. A stroll through the old town, a drive into the surrounding mountains and an evening beneath the clear Karoo sky offer a rewarding taste of this quiet corner of the Western Cape.
