Sutherland Accommodation

The small town of Sutherland in the Northern Cape is some four hours' drive from Cape Town and is 2000m above sea level. Close to the town is the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), which is the national centre for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa. The observatory is placed here because of the almost perfectly clear skies the town is famous for.

The town is in the heart of the Great Karoo and well off the beaten track. The nearby Roggeveld Mountains are frequently covered with snow in wintertime, and the town can be the coldest place in South Africa.

Sutherland is reputedly the most southerly place where a diamond has been found in South Africa, and old diamond diggings can be seen in the area. Just to the southeast of the town is an eroded volcano named Salpeterkop, extinct for some 66 million years and now filled with sedimentary materials including saltpeter, hence the name.

Sutherland, located in the Northern Cape of South Africa, offers a unique and tranquil experience with its clear skies and historical sites.

Here are some interesting things to see and do around Sutherland:

1. Sutherland Observatory: Known for its exceptionally clear night skies, Sutherland is home to several astronomical observatories. Visitors can tour the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and learn about the cutting-edge research conducted here. Night sky tours are popular, offering breathtaking views of stars, planets, and galaxies through powerful telescopes.

2. NG Church: The historic Dutch Reformed Church in Sutherland, known as the NG Church, is a prominent landmark in the town. Built in 1899, its architecture reflects the history and culture of the area. Visitors can admire its distinctive design and serene surroundings.

Visitors can simply step outside at night to observe the Milky Way and countless stars visible to the naked eye. Photographers also flock here to capture stunning images of the night sky.

6. Matjiesfontein Village (nearby): About an hour's drive from Sutherland lies Matjiesfontein, a historic Victorian village frozen in time.
